My friend Kristin and I chatted about reading the Bible with our families this morning on IG Live, and I’ve had lots of questions from many of you since then. Here are 5 things I’d love to share about Scripture:
1️⃣ You don’t have to have a theology degree to pick up the Bible. Just pick it up and start, and before you do, say a 5 second prayer to the Holy Spirit and ask Him to help you understand.
2️⃣ If you don’t understand something or start getting bored, that’s okay. It takes time and perseverance just like any other habit that’s worthwhile.
3️⃣ A good translation to start with is the RSVCE (Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition). Ignatius Press sells beautiful RSV’s. (Don’t get the NRSV it’s not a good translation). .

4️⃣ You don’t need a Commentary Bible when you’re starting. In fact a bad commentary is way worse than no commentary. If you’re not sure of your sources, skip commentaries and just “take up and read.” .

5️⃣If you don’t know where to start, start with your Gospels. The Gospel of John is a particularly wonderful place to start. Learn the good news of Jesus Christ, his mission and his message, and then you can go back to the beginning and discover how History is your story too. The words of Scripture have a divinely infused power to change your life. The Bible tells us that the Word of God “is living and active, sharper than any two edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit...and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” -Hebrews 4:12

I came back into the kitchen after changing a diaper and the lunch dishes were all done. And a little voice says “mommy it wasn’t my turn but I did all the dishes for you. Because I love you.
